FAQs

What is pelvic floor physical therapy?

Pelvic floor physical therapy is specialized physical therapy focused on the muscles, connective tissues, nerves, and surrounding structures that support the pelvis, pelvic organs, and core. Treatment can address concerns such as urinary leakage, pelvic pain, painful intercourse, constipation, bowel or bladder symptoms, pregnancy and postpartum changes, and difficulty returning to exercise. At Own It Wellness, we take a whole-body approach to help you understand your symptoms and build confidence in your body.

What conditions can pelvic floor PT help with?

Pelvic floor physical therapy can help with a wide range of concerns, including urinary leakage or urgency, pelvic pressure or heaviness, constipation, bowel or bladder dysfunction, pelvic or abdominal pain, painful intercourse, pregnancy-related changes, postpartum recovery, and difficulty with lifting, running, jumping, or other physical activities. You do not have to wait until symptoms are severe to seek care.

Do I need a doctor's referral to see a pelvic floor physical therapist?

No. Florida allows patients to access physical therapy directly, meaning you can schedule an evaluation with a physical therapist without first obtaining a doctor's referral.

Own It Wellness does not participate with insurance plans, so you can schedule directly with us without coordinating a referral or waiting for an insurance authorization. We will take the time to understand your concerns, perform a comprehensive evaluation, and create an individualized plan based on your goals.

If your condition requires medical evaluation or care outside the scope of physical therapy, we will coordinate with or refer you to the appropriate healthcare provider.

What should I expect during my first appointment?

Your first visit begins with a conversation about your symptoms, health history, lifestyle, activity level, and goals. We then perform an individualized physical assessment to identify factors that may be contributing to your symptoms. Depending on your concerns and with your consent, this may include an external or internal pelvic floor assessment. We will always explain what we are doing and why, and nothing is performed without your informed consent. You will leave with a clear understanding of what may be contributing to your symptoms and a personalized plan moving forward.

Absolutely. Pelvic floor physical therapy isn't only for treating problems after they occur. Many women seek care proactively during pregnancy, postpartum, when returning to exercise, or when preparing for activities that place increased demands on the pelvic floor. We can also help you understand how your pelvic floor, breathing, core, and whole body work together so you can move, exercise, and live with confidence.
